Uproot Teas
As a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, Cindy Li inherited her ancestors’ love of tea and a reverence for the farming communities her family came from. During college, Cindy learned about the colonial tea trade, a history steeped in abusing farmers and profiting off the commoditization of their crops. Cindy founded Uproot Teas to uproot the antiquated tea trade by bringing transparency to their sourcing and pay. The company’s tea prices are set by their farm partners, not the commodity market. They do this by working directly with farmers to pay them what they ask for. As a result, Uproot Teas pays their farm partners between 20-100x fair trade wage depending on the crop. They are also proud to be a zero-waste company by using whole tea leaves and using packaging that is 100% compostable.
